Manitoba

Manitoba is the fifth most populous province in Canada and the easternmost of the three prairie provinces. Manitoba’s capital and largest city is Winnipeg, the seventh most populous municipality in Canada. Manitoba is bordered by the provinces of Ontario to the east and Saskatchewan to the west, the territory of Nunavut to the north, and the US states of North Dakota and Minnesota to the south.
Manitoba is at the centre of the Hudson Bay drainage basin, with a high volume of water draining into Lake Winnipeg and then north down the Nelson River into Hudson Bay. Manitoba has over 100,000 lakes and waterways, the perfect lure for anglers seeking some of the continent’s largest fish. Manitoba’s major lakes are Lake Manitoba, Lake Winnipegosis, and Lake Winnipeg, the tenth-largest freshwater lake in the world.

Manitoba has a moderately strong economy based largely on natural resources. There are sixty-five funded independent schools in Manitoba, including three boarding schools. These schools must follow the Manitoban curriculum and meet other provincial requirements. There are five universities in Manitoba, regulated by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Literacy.[123] Four of these universities are in Winnipeg: the University of Manitoba, the largest and most comprehensive; the University of Winnipeg, a liberal arts school primarily focused on undergrad studies downtown; Université de Saint-Boniface, the province’s only French-language university; and the Canadian Mennonite University, a religious-based institution Manitoba has more curling clubs than Ontario and Quebec combined and it is often referred to as the “Curling Capital of the World.

The stream is locally driven and based on the needs of the employers in Manitoba. The stream is further divided into distinguished categories: Skilled Workers in Manitoba and Skilled Workers Overseas.

International Education Stream:

This stream is specifically dedicated to international students graduating in Manitoba. There are three different pathways to get nominated under this stream :

  • Career Employment Pathway: The Career Employment Pathway provides faster nomination pathways for post-secondary students who graduate and find long-term employment in Manitoba in an in-demand occupation consistent with their training. If you meet these conditions, you will be eligible to apply to the MPNP immediately after graduating and obtaining the job offer.
  • Graduate Internship Pathway: The Graduate Internship Pathway provides faster nomination pathways for international student master and doctoral graduates through internships contributing to industry innovation in Manitoba. Graduates who complete an Accelerate or Elevate internship with Mitacs in Manitoba can apply to the MPNP immediately after graduation, whether or not they have a job offer.
  • International Student Entrepreneur Pilot: The International Student Entrepreneur Pilot will provide up to 20 (per calendar year) international students who have graduated in Manitoba with the opportunity to pursue entrepreneurship rather than employment. Once the applicant meets the conditions of their Business Performance Agreement, they are nominated for permanent residence.

Business Investor Stream:

BIS allows Manitoba to recruit and nominate qualified business investors and entrepreneurs from around the world who have the intent and ability to start or purchase businesses in Manitoba. Applicants will no longer be required to submit a deposit of $100,000 to the Manitoba government. There are two different pathways to get nominated under this stream :

  • The Entrepreneur Pathway: The renewed Entrepreneur Pathway replaces the previous MPNP-B stream. It allows Manitoba to recruit and nominate qualified business people from around the world who have the intent and ability to move to Manitoba and establish, purchase a business or become partners in an existing business within the first 24 months of arrival in Canada on a temporary work permit.
  • The Farm Investor Pathway: The renewed Farm Investor Pathway (FIP) replaces the previous Farm Strategic Recruitment Initiative. The Pathway is for individuals with proven farm business experience, sufficient available capital to invest, and who intend to establish and operate a farm operation in rural Manitoba. It is expected that successful applicants of the FIP will establish a farm business in rural Manitoba producing primary products that are consistent with the province’s current farm industry. The type of operation and investment must correlate with Provincial statistics and be relevant to Manitoba’s farm industry. Agri-business operations not producing primary products may qualify under the Entrepreneur Pathway.
