Work Permit

Work permit enables foreign workers to work and earn in Canada.

Employer-specific work permit ( closed work permit)

This permit allows you to work according to a specific employer and work as per the employer’s conditions, which include the employer you are permitted to work for, the duration of the work and the location of the work.

A job offer letter from the employer and a copy of LMIA from the employer is required to proceed with the application.

Open work permit


Open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada except for an employer :

  • who is listed as ineligible on the list of the employers who have failed to comply with the conditions or
  • who regularly offers striptease or erotic services.

Post Graduate work permit


The post-graduate work permit allows fresh graduates from designated learning institutions, to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian experience.

Eligibility criteria for a post-graduate work permit

  • must have complete a full-time program at a designated learning institute
  • the program must be at least 8 months or longer to gain the work permit
  • the program must lead to either a degree, diploma or certificate
  • must have received a transcript and an official letter from the education provider stating the completion of the program
  • maintained a full-time status in Canada during each academic session of the program apart from few exceptions.

Spousal open work permit


The spousal open work permit is for those who want to accompany their partners to Canada on a valid study or work permit. The spousal open work permit enables the partner to work for any employer and earn a living in Canada without burdening their respective partners.

Spousal open work permit

Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit if you:

  • have a valid study permit and
  • are a full-time student at one of these types of schools:
    • a public post-secondary school, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec
    • a private college-level school in Quebec
    • a Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate)
  • on a work permit and employed at NOC 0, A or B category of job
